Raise your hand if May 2020 began completely differently than you’d imagined.

Time often seems to ebb and flow. Echoing recent memes, I remember March in surreal slow motion, yet April passed in an instant. The pandemic brought with it various anxieties and losses, though I admit to undeniable privilege: my health and income are consistent, and staying mostly inside is viable. For once, a slower domestic life including cooking and baking really appeals to me. Sometimes it’s nice to have something within one’s control.

I was recently reminded of this blog and decided to resuscitate it. Living in France stifled the writing spark more than I expected, and then life quickly became busy, but it seems like a viable time for another try.

Where is Optimist in Motion going? This site started its life as a travel-focused blog, and while I will continue reflecting on relevant experiences and ideas, it doesn’t seem likely I will travel anytime soon. Right now, even leaving the city would feel like a big deal, and I don’t expect life to go back to “normal” for a while yet.

On the other hand, I’m still very much fascinated by words and language. This has been the focus of my year, in fact; I am finishing up an M.A. in Rhetoric and Communication Design this August. I’m cautiously optimistic about what will happen beyond that. Why not try to pursue a more consistent creative practice in the meantime?

You’ve caught me during the brief break between terms, but I would like to try to post here more regularly.

Possible topic inspirations:

  • Recent reading or watching
  • Reflections on isolation, community, etc.
  • Language learning adventures
  • Concepts that stood out in my studies
  • The pursuit of motivation and “normal”
  • Fun miscellanea (like being in love now, go figure)

Apparently my abandoned blog still has more traffic than I expected.
